Work Related Learning

Since September 2004 there has been a statutory requirement that all young people should experience some work-related learning at key stage 4.

Work-Related Learning is defined as:
Planned activity that uses the context of work to develop knowledge, skills and understanding useful in work, including learning through the experience of work, learning about work and working practices, and learning the skills for work.

To support the statutory requirement, QCA has produced a non-statutory framework which sets out the suggested minimum experience for all young people - this is set out as nine elements:

  1. Relate own strengths to career intentions and understand available options
  2. Develop awareness of the extent/diversity of opportunities in learning and work
  3. Use experience of work to extend understanding of careers and work
  4. Learn from contact with people who work
  5. Learn how and why businesses operate
  6. Learn about working practices
  7. Experience of working practices and environments
  8. Undertake tasks set in work contexts
  9. Engage with business world applications
