Teachers Guidance
TIMESCALES AND PROCEDURES

Block Placements run for one week. Usually students should not be asked to work more than a standard 8 hour day or unnecessarily unsocial hours. Students should not be asked to work more than 5 consecutive days within a 7 day period.

Extended Work Experience is allowed under the Education Act 1996 which may include placements of no more than two days a week.

Vocational Work Experience - usually undertaken as a block placement to support a vocational programme being studied within school.  Advance notice needed if Tamar EBP are to help in trawling for placements.

The Process:

  • The school will deliver a programme of preparation before the placement to each student.
  • Students will be asked to think about the sort of placement they would like to experience.
  • Students should develop individual action plans including identifying their strengths and weaknesses
  • Consider how they would cope with different situations and possible problems
  • Students should be briefed by teachers, business personnel or members of Tamar EBP.
  • Students should be given full details of their placement programme.
  • Students will have the opportunity to find their own placement or there will be a pool of placements available to choose from the WebView Website
  • All students should be briefed in health and safety matters in the work place, prior to taking up their placement.
  • Students must attend any additional Health and Safety Training Sessions prior to placements within the construction and agricultural environments. These are organised by Tamar EBP.
  • We will visit all employers to carry out a Placement Suitability Visit to ensure the Health, Safety and Welfare each student
  • Each Student will be issued with a Work Experience Contract
  • Students will be expected to attend a pre-placement meeting with the employer
  • Students are given a diary/log book to record their experience
  • Students are visited at least once by school to monitor their progress
  • During the Work Experience placement students are expected to behave and carry out tasks as would any other employee
  • The school evaluates with students their placement and whether their experience has influenced their choice of career, and the impact work experience has had on them individually.

The DCSF has supported the development of Work Experience Learning Frameworks, which can be used to help your Work Experience Programme.

Part of a wider initiative run by Tamar EBP is to link teachers with industry, in an attempt to improve work based learning.  The aim is to provide various tasks within various areas of industry that provide students with relevant and meaningful experiences, which give an insight into 'real work' whilst also addressing particular areas of the school curriculum.
